Charleston Weightlifting Club

The Charleston Weightlifting Club is a club focused on olympic style weightlifting at the Big Work Fitness gym in downtown Charleston, SC.

The club is an informal group of gym members at Big Work fitness. If you are focused on strength training, and you haven’t discovered Big Work Fitness, head over to their site now and check them out! There is no membership fee, and Big Work Fitness is the only 24/7 access gym in Charleston, SC, that offers specialty equipment for serious weightlifters, powerlifters and body builders. Unlike expensive gems that cost $200 per month to be a part of classes, Big Work provides all of the equipment without the cost of coached classes. Work out whenever you want, 24/7.

Olympic Weightlifting

The commonly used terms “Oly” or “Olympic Weightlifting” refer to the Olympic sport of “weightlifting.” It is an incredible individual sport, organized internationally by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), and governed in the United States by USA Weightlifting (USAW). Even if competing with a team, athletes must individually make three attempts at the Snatch and Clean & Jerk, posting a max completed attempt for each, as well as a total score of both.

While most weightlifters are introduced to Weightlifting at CrossFit or similar style gyms, where the weights are in lbs, official USAW-sanctioned competitions use kilogram (kg) plates. There are no other gyms in Charleston like Big Work Fitness that offer quality KG training plates.

Whether you are brand new to strength training and have never attempted any of the olympic lifts, or you’re a seasoned competitor looking to make national or international level events, our club welcomes you. All you have to do is become a member at Big Work and let us know you’d like to be a member of the weightlifting club.

The Sport of Weightlifting

The sport of weightlifting is an incredibly fulfilling individual sport. Even if you aren’t able to compete with the strongest men or women in your weight class, it is still a battle against yourself. Sure, you post some good numbers in the gym, but the only time we use the term PR is when you can do it in front of judges.

In training, the combination of disciplined attention to technique and strength training provide an incredibly challenging, yet rewarding exercise. If you learn good technique from one of our weightlifting coaches, and you put in the work, you will get stronger and improve performance.

In competition, you learn something about yourself. For first time competitors, it is rewarding to go 6 for 6 in front of a crowd of judges, weightlifters and fans. Once you’ve had several competitions under your belt and better understand your ability to perform in competition, can you make an attempt on a competition platform that even beats your best numbers in the gym?

Fair warning: this is really fun. If you make the jump to finally participating in a competition, you may be hooked!
